TYPES OF HEARING AIDS

BEHIND-THE-EAR (BTE)

RECEIVER-IN-CANAL (RIC)

With BTE hearing aids, all the technology is housed behind your ear and sound it transmitted into your ear through a tube. It is more common for these devices to come in a power option, so they are suitable for those with mild to severe hearing loss.

Similar to the BTE hearing aid, an RIC hearing aid sits behind your ear. However, the receiver (the speaker) is located in the portion of the hearing aid that sits inside your canal by a thin wire.

IN-THE-CANAL (ITC)

IN-THE-EAR (ITE)

ITC hearing aids also rest inside your ear canal, but they are not as discreet as CIC hearing aids. These devices use a custom mold of your ear canal for comfort. Because they are more accessible than CIC devices, these hearing aids are easier for the user to adjust.

Like ITC hearing aids, ITE hearing aids are also custom fit. However, these devices sit entirely in your outer ear instead of your ear canal. Since these hearing aids are larger, they can usually accommodate more technology than ITC and CIC hearing aids.

COMPLETELY-IN-CANAL (CIC)

Sometimes referred to as invisible hearing aids, these devices are small and sit far inside your ear canal, so that others cannot typically see them. CIC hearing aids are great for those who prefer discretion; however, they can sometimes lack features that other hearing aids have, such as directionality.

At your first fitting, we will take you through a step by step of how to clean your hearing aid and send you home with a checklist that’s easy to follow. After you are fit with a new pair of hearing aids, we will want to schedule regular follow-up appointments to make sure they are performing well for you. We will want to see you two weeks after you are fit, then a month later, and then three months later.

It is recommended to come in every six months for a hearing test. This will allow us to determine if we need to make any adjustments to improve the performance of your hearing aids. If you need programming changes for your hearing aids (to improve loudness, clarity, etc.), we’d be happy to help, even if hearing aids were not purchased through us. We will also want to clean your hearing aids, as this helps to prolong their lifespan.
